RIP Carlo Rambaldi, special effects master.
(I only had time to skim this clip, but I don’t think it contains the work of his that most recently traumatized me: the tentacle monster in Zulawski’s Possession.)
I miss awesome hand-made monsters and creatures. Rambaldi’s work was amazing: those tiny, delicate membranes, particularly on the tall alien’s eyelids from Close Encounters and the unforgettable snarling lips of Ridley Scott’s Alien. That’s what made these creatures so realistic to me. In Spielberg’s films, his creatures walked an uncanny line, and somehow seemed as cute as they were grotesque—truly alien.
