One of my favorite things about the Texas State Fair is the Birds of the World show at the old band shell. The show features beautiful rescued birds, particularly birds of prey, in a way that manages to maintain the birds’ dignity (i.e., no parrots on bicycles) while also teaching about wildlife conservation. This year, I finally got a front row seat, and I was close enough to be picked for a close-up view of a gorgeous African eagle owl as it flew across the audience to a perch just above my head while I sat on stage.
